  • One of the first architecture firms to announce plans to go carbon negative in the UK
  • More than 2,800 tonnes of CO2 recaptured over the next 30 years
  • Announcement marks the next step in the PRP’s journey towards becoming more sustainable

PRP announces plans to be carbon negative by 2050, by both reducing and offsetting its carbon emissions, leading the way in the UK’s transition to a low carbon economy. The announcement reflects the PRP’s commitment towards becoming a more sustainable business by improving the firm’s environmental performance, service offering, and driving long-term, sustainable growth.

PRP has signed a partnership agreement with Forest Carbon to mitigate its own carbon emissions through supporting UK woodland creation in both Cumbria and Northumberland. Overall, more than 2,800 tonnes of CO2 are expected to be recaptured over the next 30 years.

Alongside this, PRP is refining its service offering to clients so as to provide a more integrated design and technical service which aims to address the challenges we face in tackling climate change and reducing carbon emissions.

This will build on the firm’s longstanding capability in environmental sustainability, masterplanning and landscape design, and will also link with PRP’s ideas for post-pandemic living and provide more choice for intergenerational living.

Brendan Kilpatrick, Senior Partner at PRP said “We all have a part to play in the environmental challenge ahead. I am hopeful that others will follow our lead so that the profession can demonstrate by example that a holistic approach can be taken in designing built form and external environment to create sustainable communities for the needs of a changing society.”

Andrew Mellor, Partner at PRP said: “We take the environmental impact that we have as a built environment business very seriously. We continually strive to reduce the impact of our operations including through continually improving the sustainability performance of our projects. PRP has always been an environmentally focussed and ethical practice, and we are proud to be able to make this long-term commitment to measuring and reducing our carbon emissions and to making the balance carbon negative over that cycle.”

PRP is a founding member of the UK Green Building Council, member of the Landscape Institute and has a dedicated environmental services team.
