As you start thinking about your future, discovering the diverse opportunities in architecture and the wider built environment could be a game-changer. At PRP, we recently welcomed students like to explore and learn more about our world through our work experience programme. From hands-on model-making to urban design and 3D modelling, these young talents had a glimpse into the diverse roles our industry has to offer. See how their experiences could inspire your next steps!

Discovering model-making in architecture

Sam, age 15

This week, Sam took on the challenge of transforming an old three-storey building into a vibrant, three-level go-karting centre. His role involved designing the layout and creating a scale model of the proposed renovation.

Sam learned how to use a hot foam cutter to create precise models, the intricacies of scaling models accurately, and explored various walling and construction methods. "Using the hot wire cutter was my favourite part of the week,” he said enthusiastically.

Sam’s time at PRP sparked a keen interest in the model-making side of architecture. He discovered that “architecture is not just about designing buildings on a computer but can also involve a hands-on process to bring buildings to life.”

Sam found this week invaluable for understanding the broader scope of a career in architecture. He now sees the potential for a future in model-making and construction design, fields he hadn't previously considered. "I am very interested in the model-making aspect of it," he expressed.

Sam rated his experience: 8/10

Exploring urban design and sustainability

Anna, age 14

Anna engaged with several teams at PRP, including Urban Design, Sustainability, and Development Consultancy. Throughout the week, she compiled a comprehensive presentation showcasing her work and learning.

Anna’s sessions were hands-on and varied. She learned new terminology in sustainability and discovered the urban design processes that precede construction, using maps to ensure area suitability. "I loved the site visit because it gave me an insider's view of building refurbishment," Anna said. "I enjoyed being part of the Urban Design team. The mix of creativity with mapping and analysis really appealed to me."

Anna found the week informative, clearing up misconceptions about architecture and providing a realistic view of the profession. "This experience opened many pathways for me and showed the reality of working in architecture. I appreciate the team’s support and willingness to teach me."

Her experience solidified her interest in pursuing architecture, especially the creative and analytical aspects of urban design. "This week helped me decide that architecture is definitely something I want to pursue."

Anna rated her experience: 9/10

Bringing ideas to life with 3D modelling

Nicholas, age 16

Nicholas chose to develop a residential and retail project in his local area, taking it through all stages from site selection to 3D computer modelling.

Throughout the week, Nicholas learned the process of design development and mastered the use of 3D modelling software. "Visualising my project in 3D with Rhino was my favourite part of the week as I was able to see my ideas come to life." Nicholas reflected.

His time at PRP was eye-opening, revealing the many specialty fields within architecture. Nicholas found the experience in an office environment particularly beneficial for developing his way of learning and independence. "Being in a professional setting helped me understand how different aspects of architecture come together," Nicholas observed.

Nicholas is now considering a future career in one of the many specialty fields he was exposed to, appreciating the diverse opportunities within architecture. "The skills and independence I developed this week will definitely support my future career."

Nicholas rated his experience: 9/10

This week at PRP gave Sam, Anna, and Nicholas a real taste of architecture, from creating scale models to exploring urban design and 3D modelling. Their time with us has opened their eyes to the many paths in the field and helped them pinpoint their future goals. A big shout-out to our teams who made this experience so memorable and guided these young talents into the exciting world of architecture.
